Implementing a Broad Liberal Platform

Canada has avoided the uncertainty frequently associated with tight federal minority governments, electing a majority Liberal administration, with an estimated 184 seats in the 338-seat House of Commons. The Conservatives, with an estimated 99 seats, will be the Official Opposition.

While election platforms are typically adjusted over time, key planks in the Liberals’ platform suggest significant new directions for Canada over the second half of this decade. In the first half decade after the 2008-09 recession, scaling back red ink was a priority, with balanced books regained in fiscal 2014-15 (FY15), and the accumulated deficit dropping to 31.0% of GDP by March 2015 from the 33.3% peak two years earlier.
